Headaches & Migraines Q & A

What are the different types of headaches?

A headache can strike anyone at any time. There are many different kinds of headaches, but some are more common than others:

Tension

Tension headaches cause radiating pain from the top of your spine around to your forehead. Stress, poor posture, eye strain, inadequate nutrition, and lack of sleep cause tension headaches.

Cluster

Cluster headaches are intense, painful headaches that affect one side of your head and occur in clusters. Abnormalities in your body’s biology cause cluster headaches.

Migraine

Migraines cause excruciating head pain but are usually accompanied by several other disconcerting symptoms as well. When a migraine hits, you may feel nauseous and dizzy, and become extremely sensitive to light. The cause of migraines isn’t fully understood but may become associated with environmental factors and family history.

Sinus

The pressure in your sinus cavity radiates into your cheeks and forehead and forms a sinus headache. Infection or inflammation of your sinus cavity is almost always the culprit when a sinus headache occurs.

What is the difference in primary and secondary headaches?

If your headache is random or isolated and not associated with another condition, it’s a primary headache. When there’s another condition lurking that provokes your headaches, it is secondary.

Primary

Problems with your muscles, nerves, or blood vessels can trigger a primary headache. Migraines, tension headaches, and cluster headaches all fall under the umbrella of primary headaches.

Secondary

When an underlying condition activates your head pain, it’s a secondary headache. The list of possible causes for secondary headaches is as long as the myriad of health conditions that exist. A few of them are:

  • Blood clot
  • Tumor
  • Concussion
  • Dehydration
  • Overuse of medication
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Sinusitis

How are headaches and migraines treated?

Dr. Rosenberger uses Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and functional medicine to relieve your discomfort while also eradicating the cause. She does everything possible to optimize your body so that it can heal itself.
